You can bring pets from Ukraine to the UK: make sure you know the rules

The UK government wants to make it easy for you to bring pets that you love with you.  There are different rules for different types of pet and also rules for different circumstances.

The rules update (sometimes daily) as the UK government tries to make it easier for everybody.  Here we tell you where to start and some key things that you need to be aware of.

Headlines

You will need a licence before you can bring your pet into the UK from Ukraine.  You will need to contact the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) as your first step.

APHA will guide you on how to apply for a licence.  They will also tell you what the latest rules are and how those rules apply to different circumstances.

You must agree a date, time and also the place where you will enter the UK with APHA. Before you can agree these details, APHA will need you to fill out forms to provide them with information so that they can guide you through the process.

Starting Point

As a first step, you will need to contact APHA either by telephone or email:

Things to be aware of

Quarantine:  some pets (dogs, cats and ferrets) may need to enter quarantine for up to 4 months.  Factors that decide if quarantine is needed include:

Quarantine costs: the UK government will pay quarantine costs for you.

Quarantine conditions: UK quarantine centres work to good standards, so that everyone can trust that their pets will be well looked after.  APHA are also responsible for checking that quarantine centres operate to high standards.  This includes checking:

Number of pets:  Under normal conditions people are limited to a maximum bringing 5 pets into the UK.  If you have more than 5 pets you should discuss this with APHA.

Airlines:  Some airlines will not let you bring your pet on a plane.  Here is a list of airlines that allow pets

Airline charges:  the costs for pets will be different for each airline.

Northern Ireland: If you are coming to Northern Ireland then different rules apply.  APHA will guide you towards the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)
