Information Pack for Afghans on the ARAP and ACRS schemes
Marriage Allowance allows a non-taxpayer to transfer a portion of their tax-free personal allowance to their spouse or civil partner, helping reduce the couple’s overall tax bill by up to £252 per year.
You may also be able to backdate your claim for up to 4 previous tax years, gaining over £1,000 in total.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if all the following apply:
You’re married or in a civil partnership.
One partner earns less than £12,570 per year and does not pay tax.
The other partner earns between £12,571 and £50,270 per year (£43,662 in Scotland) and pays basic rate income tax.
You were both born on or after 6 April 1935.
You cannot apply if you are only living together and are not legally married or in a civil partnership.
How to Apply
Only the non-taxpayer partner should apply.
You’ll need:
Your National Insurance numbers
Your partner’s National Insurance number
Proof of identity (passport, payslip, or P60)
Apply online at:

Once approved:
HMRC adjusts your partner’s tax code.
Any backdated payment is refunded by cheque or bank transfer.
