Moving House in the UK: What You Need to Update

Introduction

Moving to a new home is an exciting step, but it comes with important responsibilities. To avoid delays, missed payments, or legal issues, it’s essential to update your information with the relevant organisations and services. This checklist will help you organise everything you need to change when moving from one house to another in the UK — especially in London.

  1. Address Changes

Many services rely on having your correct address for communication, billing, and identification. Failing to update your address can lead to lost mail, missed deadlines, or even fraud.

What to do:

Update your address with:

  • DVLA (Driving licence and car log book)

  • HMRC (Tax and benefits)

  • DWP / Universal Credit

  • GP and dentist

  • Your employer

  • Banks and building societies

  • Insurance companies

  • TV Licensing

  • Your local councils (for Council Tax)

  • Electoral Register

  • Schools or childcare services

  • Online accounts (Amazon, eBay, etc.)

  • Royal Mail (Set up post redirection)

2. Utilities and Services

Gas, electricity, water, and internet are essential for everyday life. You must inform providers of your move to avoid being charged for services you no longer use or facing delays at the new home.

What to do:

  • Notify and close or transfer accounts with your gas, electricity, and water providers.

  • Submit final meter readings at the old address and initial readings at the new one.

  • Move or set up broadband and TV packages ahead of time to avoid gaps in service.

3. Financial Institutions

Banks, credit cards, and loyalty schemes need your correct address for security reasons and to send important updates. Wrong information may also affect your credit score.

What to do:

  • Update your address with your bank, credit card providers, and PayPal.

  • Notify credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion).

  • Update store cards or loyalty schemes like Tesco Clubcard or Boots Advantage.

4. Household-Related Tasks

Some practical steps make the moving process smoother and help you avoid last-minute problems or extra charges.

What to do:

  • Book a removal company or van hire.

  • Notify your landlord or letting agent, return keys, and settle deposits (if renting).

  • Update or cancel contents and home insurance.

  • Schedule professional cleaning (if required).

  • Confirm bin collection days and recycling services at your new address.

  • Test and check smoke alarms in the new home.

5. Health and Personal Updates

Your health and wellbeing depend on access to the right services. Make sure your medical records follow you to your new area and that your pets are also registered correctly.

What to do:

  • Register with a new GP and dentist if needed.

  • Update address with opticians or clinics.

  • If you have pets, update your details with the veterinarian and the microchip database.

  • Let friends and family know your new address.

6. Other Considerations

There are many small but important details that can affect daily life after your move. These are often forgotten but can cause unnecessary issues later.

What to do:

  • Update your vehicle registration and apply for a parking permit (if required).

  • Arrange for any school or nursery transfers.

  • Redirect your prescriptions or medical supplies.

  • Inform any clubs, gyms, or professional associations of your new contact details.
