Afghan Community Newsletter - September 2025

Dear Afghan Community and Friends,

We hope you had a restful break over the summer and are settling into September with renewed energy. Below are some important updates and useful resources we hope you’ll find helpful. We begin with an urgent matter that has affected many in our community in recent weeks.

Data Breach and Scam Alert – September 2025

Sky News has reported that scammers are targeting Afghans affected by the MOD data breach, pretending to offer compensation and asking for ID documents. This is a worrying development.

Please be advised and do not share personal information with anyone claiming to offer payments. To better understand what is happening, you can read the full article here: https://news.sky.com/story/victims-of-afghan-data-leak-receive-scam-emails-offering-tens-of-thousands-in-compensation-sky-news-can-reveal-13404544

For those looking for more detailed information, Refugee Legal Support has published a helpful factsheet.

It explains the data breach in simple terms and may answer some of the questions you or your family have. While it is not legal advice, it’s a useful starting point. The factsheet also includes template letters to help affected applicants contact the Ministry of Defence and follow up on their applications. https://refugeelegalsupport.org/legal-info/for-people-from-afghanistan/data-breach-factsheet/

We know that September can feel overwhelming for many of you.
