Nadiia’s Walk for Hope: Helping Children Reach Safety

💔“Imagine fleeing your home with nothing but your children.”

That was Nadiia’s reality - as a mother escaping war in Ukraine with her two young kids. Today, she’s a caseworker at USPUK, helping other displaced families rebuild their lives with dignity in the UK.

During Refugee Week 2025, Nadiia launched the “Walk for Hope” — a 500-mile walking campaign to raise funds for children still trapped in war zones. Together with the USPUK team, she walked across cities, coastlines, and countryside to shine a light on their journeys.

USPUK is a charity helping displaced people reach safety. We support families from Ukraine and Afghanistan — providing casework, resettlement support, and signposting. All our team members, like Nadia, are refugees themselves.

This is a campaign built on lived experience — and a deep belief that no child should face war.

Your support could be the step that brings a child to safety.

Meet Nadiia and read her story

A month before Refugee Week2025, we’re thrilled to announce a fundraising campaign launched by Nadiia, our caseworker at USPUK.

Through her work with communities, she has supported many displaced Ukrainians to find safety and rebuild their lives.

Not long ago, she made that difficult journey herself, leaving Ukraine with her children after yet another rocket attack, determined to get them to safety.

But there are still so many more children in danger.

Aim: Nadiia aims to raise £5,000 and support further 50 children escape the danger as every child deserves to be safe.

Working with communities to support displaced people rebuilding their lives in the UK

At USPUK, our mission is to provide essential information to individuals who have been displaced and are looking to resettle in the UK. We help them integrate into supportive communities, offering them paths to employment, housing, and other opportunities. Our goal is to amplify their voices by sharing their stories and perspectives, which can foster greater understanding and empathy.

Families who found safety through Communities for Ukraine

Through our Communities for Ukraine matching project, we’ve helped families — many with young children — escape regions where danger is a daily reality. By connecting them with compassionate UK hosts, we’ve given them the chance to rebuild their lives in safety, stability, and hope. Here are some of their journeys:

Help Find a Hope

But there are still so many more children in danger. We aim to raise £5,000 and support further 50 children escape the danger as every deserves to be safe. The funds will go towards essential advice, support, and travel arrangements for displaced families from Ukraine.

Every pound you can give throughout our campaign, helps move a child out of harm’s way.

Communities for Ukraine (USPUK and CitizensUK)

The Communities for Ukraine programme is a joint initiative between USPUK and Citizens UK. Both organisations have been awarded ‘Recognised Provider’ status by the UK Government to match displaced Ukrainians with prospective hosts under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Afghan Resettlement Project (USPUK x More in Common)

USPUK has developed resettlement support for Afghans under the ACRS and ARAP schemes who arrived in the UK after the Taliban takeover. Drawing from our experience resettling Ukrainians, we recognise the crucial nature of building trust with those we support. Employing Afghans for the USPUK project enabled us to swiftly establish strong networks within the community.
