From nightly sirens to a home filled with warmth

Attacks on residential areas and the energy system were becoming more frequent — almost every night we sat in darkness, listening to air-raid sirens, unable to sleep properly.

I am endlessly grateful to our sponsors for their care, patience, and kindness. Because of them, we felt that even far from home, you can still be safe — and you don’t have to face everything alone.

In Maria’s own words:

My daughter and I are from the Kyiv region in Ukraine. At some point, I realised that we needed to look for a safer place to live. Russian attacks on residential areas and the energy system were becoming more frequent — almost every night we sat in darkness, listening to air-raid sirens, unable to sleep properly.

I submitted an application, though I had almost stopped believing that anything would work out. And then one day, I received a call from USPUK Consultants who told me they had found a potential sponsor for me and my daughter. That was the first time I connected with the people who would later become our sponsors.

We began preparing documents, and during that time we stayed in touch — exchanging photos, sharing small details about our lives. It helped us feel that we were moving in the right direction, that someone was waiting for us.

When we arrived in the UK, they welcomed us with so much warmth. Two Ukrainian women were already living with them, and they had a lovely tradition — having dinner together every evening. For me, these dinners became a moment of comfort and belonging, even far from home.

They helped us with all the documents, explained various local things, and they continue to support us even now. Thanks to them, our adaptation was much calmer and much easier.

On weekends, we often go to the seaside. Once, we went on a walking route along the coast — not just a simple stroll, but a little hike: up and down different paths and stairs, with beautiful views from various points. The walk took about 45 minutes and was incredibly interesting and atmospheric.

I am endlessly grateful to our sponsors for their care, patience, and kindness. Because of them, we felt that even far from home, you can still be safe — and you don’t have to face everything alone.
