Life in the UK Test
Information Pack for Afghans on the ARAP and ACRS schemes
Introduction
People living in the UK may have different immigration statuses, including Limited Leave to Remain, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), refugee status, humanitarian protection, or asylum seeker status.
Many people eventually wish to settle permanently in the UK or become British citizens. Depending on your immigration route and personal circumstances, you may need to meet certain requirements before applying for ILR or British citizenship.
For many applicants, these requirements include:
Passing the Life in the UK Test
Meeting the English language requirement (unless exempt)
Paying the relevant application fee
Most people applying for British citizenship must have already obtained ILR. In many cases, applicants must hold ILR for at least 12 months before applying for citizenship, although some exceptions apply.
Some people may be exempt from the Life in the UK Test or English language requirement because of their age or a long-term physical or mental health condition.
This information pack explains what the Life in the UK Test is, who needs to take it, how to prepare, what to expect on the day of the test, and where to find further support.
What is the Life in the UK Test?
The Life in the UK Test is a 45-minute computer-based test required for applications for British citizenship and, in most cases, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Some people who arrived under ARAP or ACRS were granted ILR without taking the Life in the UK Test or an English language test, but most will still need to meet these requirements when applying for British citizenship.
The test checks your knowledge of:
British history
Values and traditions
Laws and responsibilities
Culture and society
Government and public institutions
The test has 24 multiple-choice questions. You must score at least 75% (18 correct answers) to pass.
The test is based on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.
Who Needs to Take the Test?
You must take the test if you are:
Applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) (where required)
Applying for British citizenship
You may be exempt if:
You are under 18 years old
You are 65 years old or over
You have a long-term physical or mental health condition that prevents you from taking the test and can provide supporting medical evidence
