What is a character reference, and why do I need to provide one to become a sponsor?

A character reference is a short written statement from someone who knows you personally or professionally and can vouch for your suitability to host displaced Ukrainians.

USPUK requires every prospective sponsor to provide a character reference before we can approve you and begin searching for a guest. This is mandatory, even if:

  • You already have a DBS check

  • You have hosted before under the Homes for Ukraine scheme

Character references are a vital part of our safeguarding process. They help us ensure that all guests are matched with caring, responsible hosts who can provide a safe and supportive environment.

Without a character reference, we are unable to move forward with your application. This policy helps protect vulnerable individuals and maintain the integrity of our matching service.

USPUK ia a recognised provider under the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine Visa Scheme, USPUK continues to support safe and appropriate sponsorship matches for displaced Ukrainians.

You can make a difference

At USPUK, we support not only Ukrainian families on their journey to the UK but also the generous hosts who open their homes to them. From the moment they register on our website throughout their hosting experience, we are here to help.

If you’d like to help someone on their journey to a new beginning, consider becoming a host today. Visit our Become a Host page to learn more.
