USPUK Newsletter - May 2025

USPUK team

Thank you for staying tuned and receiving updates from USPUK. As we start our 4th year we’d want to express deep gratitude for all the donors, hosts and supporters who’ve been on this journey with us. Your support means a lot and with this May newsletter we’d want to share what we’ve been working on lately.

Celebrating our guests’ stories - Galyna’s story

As we continue sharing brave stories of people we work with, we would like to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Halyna's arrival in the UK, marking a significant milestone in her journey.

Halyna, who has just turned 70, was one of the very first individuals we helped relocate. When she arrived, she didn’t know any English and had never traveled abroad. For the first six months, she lived with a sponsor, adjusting to a completely new environment.

Today, Halyna lives independently and can communicate confidently in English. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I am incredibly thankful to the English people, the Government, and especially to my host, who I now consider my younger sister.”

UPE support - please ask your MP to sing the Early Day Motion

As first Homes for Ukraine visas come to the end and many Ukrainians are facing challenge with extending their visas via Ukrainian Permission Extension scheme, we would like to remind you that if your guest need help with this scheme, please refer them to uspuk.org/ukraine-support.

Extension is currently foreseen only for 18 months which is obviously not giving Ukrainians enough of stability to rebuild their lives stably in the UK, may they be willing to stay and contribute to the UK economy.

That is why we ask you to support our Action for Ukraine Campaign. Please email your MP today and ask them to back Early Day Motion 1000 – “Ensuring stability for Ukrainian refugees in the UK.”

Why it matters:

  • The full-scale war is now in its third year and safety in Ukraine is still a long way off.

  • Thousands of Ukrainians in the UK don’t know if they can keep their homes, jobs or school places when their visas expire.

  • A clear route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) would give Ukrainian families the security they need to rebuild and contribute fully to Britain.

How to help in 3 minutes:

  1. Find your MP’s email address at www.writetothem.com.

  2. Copy the ask: “Please sign EDM 1000 and support a pathway to ILR for Ukrainians.”

  3. Add a brief text on why you care and press send. You may use a template provided by OPORA at this link

Updates from Afghan Resettlement project

Following the closure of the Afghanistan Embassy in London, many Afghans have found themselves without clear information regarding passport extensions.

We have developed an information pack to support Afghans applying for passports via the UAE, which is currently one of the few available options. Passport support remains one of the most in-demand areas among our service users, and we have responded accordingly.
