From Hotel Living to Stability: a family of 6

A family of six arrived in the UK under the Afghan relocation scheme in 2021 after the father had worked for an international humanitarian organisation in Afghanistan. Like many newly arrived families, they hoped to rebuild their lives in safety. However, their early years in the UK were far from easy.

The family spent more than two years living in temporary hotel accommodation, which affected both the children's education and the family's wellbeing. During this time, the mother experienced serious health challenges, requiring lengthy hospital treatment and ongoing care. As the family's circumstances changed, the father left his job to become her main carer while continuing to look after their four children and manage the family's day-to-day responsibilities.

USPUK has supported the family since 2024 throughout different stages of their resettlement journey. One of the first challenges was helping them secure suitable accommodation and, after extensive support, they were finally able to move into a private rented home. We continued to provide practical guidance with school and college admissions, council services, utility accounts and understanding everyday life in the UK. As new challenges arose, we also supported the family with accessing appropriate services, financial planning and employment guidance, helping them navigate unfamiliar systems with greater confidence. He was eventually able to find another job and is currently working.

Despite the significant challenges they have faced, the family has remained resilient and determined to build a stable future in the UK. While they have made considerable progress, they continue to face financial pressures as he is the only one working in the family.

For this family, the Life in the UK Test is more than a requirement. It is another step towards putting years of uncertainty behind them and continuing to build a stable future for themselves and their children. Through this project, we hope to provide the guidance and support they need to move forward with confidence, alongside many other families rebuilding their lives in the UK.
