Reunited After Two Years Apart
Another service user we have supported over the past few years first came to USPUK at a very different stage of his resettlement journey. Having been forced to leave Afghanistan and rebuild his life in the UK, the challenges he faced when we first met him in early 2024 were very different from those he faces today.
Before leaving Afghanistan, he worked in a military role that placed him at significant personal risk and suffered serious injuries as a result. Following the fall of Kabul, he was resettled in the UK and began the difficult process of rebuilding his life in a new country. During this time, we supported him with translations, completing college forms and accessing NHS services.
He was later reunited with his wife and four children, bringing new challenges as the family began rebuilding their lives together in the UK. After spending almost two years apart from their father, becoming a family of six again brought both happiness and new responsibilities. With two toddlers and two school-aged children, the family faced the everyday costs of raising young children while helping them settle into education and adapt to life in the UK. One of his greatest hopes was that his children, particularly his daughters, would have the opportunity to attend school freely and pursue their education, something he feared they would have been denied had they remained in Afghanistan. As their needs changed, we supported the family with translations and practical assistance, including school registrations, Child Benefit applications, NHS registration and navigating other essential services. When the family later faced housing difficulties, we also supported them with the housing process, and they were able to move into temporary accommodation.
Reflecting on the support he received, he told us:
“I got help with my housing application and was able to move into accommodation very soon. Thanks to USPUK for helping refugees with housing support and school registration.”
While he has navigated many challenges independently, our support has been available when the family needed it, helping to provide additional stability at important stages of their resettlement journey. Today, his four children are attending school in London and the family continues to rebuild their life together in the UK.
